Ensuring Older Portlanders Can Stay in Their Homes

When the state cut funding for a critical program, Project Independence, that provides the support to help seniors stay living in their homes and ‘age in place’, Loretta stepped in to ensure the County found the money to keep the program going and get people off the program’s waiting list.

Project Independence, by providing help with housekeeping, personal care, grocery shopping, and adult respite services, lets Portland seniors remain in their homes and maintain their quality of life. According to the Oregon Department of Human Services, it would cost nine times as much to provide for these seniors in a Medicaid-funded retirement facility.
